Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
